It is possible to use hypnotherapy for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). OCD is where a person suffers from a persistent thought or idea. They feel they have no control over it and cannot stop, even though they know it may be irrational or makes no sense.
What’s an OCD example?
Using hypnotherapy for OCD can be applied to the following example. You may worry whether you have locked the house when leaving. It’s impossible to relax, or drive away from your home, until you have gone back to the house to check. And then check again. And possibly again… The thought can go around and around in the head and won’t go away. Going back to the house several times is not only frustrating for the individual but can affect their partner, family and friends too.
Other examples are: making sure an electric appliance has been switched off (such as straighteners or a TV), not treading on the cracks in a pavement whilst walking, having to do things in a certain order, continuously cleaning the house or hands. In fact, there are so many examples it is impossible to list them all.
Why does Obsessive Compulsive Disorder cause a problem?
One of the problems with an obsessive compulsive disorder is that it can cause anxiety. What happens is that an individual may then perform a ritual every time the thought comes into their head. For example, needing to repeat a phrase a set amount of times in the mind. Or, having to do things in a certain order.
OCD can be mild, or can take over someone’s life. It can come out of nowhere, or build up over time, and can be extremely upsetting.
Can hypnotherapy for OCD help?
Hypnotherapy for OCD can help. It is unlikely to be with suggestion therapy alone as it is essential to find out the triggers and to help the person gain a feeling of control. As the hypnotherapy works, the obsessive thoughts disappear and, along with it, the anxiety.
